Am I getting paid enough? I am a full time live-out nanny/housekeeper in Boston, MA getting paid 430/wk.?
I work 40+ hrs/wk; net pay: 0/wk
Responsibilites:
Care for 2 boys (5,8), transporting them to and from school, tennis, french lessons, Kumon center (checking/correcting children’s homework for this), park, playdates at which stay and supervise, sometimes for additional children too. Cleaning house: dishes, dusting, sweeping/vacuuming, mopping, thoroughly cleaning bathrooms, laundry, and other tasks listed daily – such as scrubbing outdoor cooking grill, window blinds, base boards..anything.
Food prep/cooking.
Household errands – grocery shopping, dry cleaning, exchanging library books- just some of my normal responsibilities.
At the start of my employment my job description was explained as "mostly childcare with light housekeeping." I’ve been working with the family for 6 months and my duties have increased in number without their acknowledgement of the obvious extra work load. I plan on asking for raise, yet need advice on how much I AM WORTH! Thanks so much!!

I work for a human resources firm and although we do not staff nannies/housekeepers I can assure you for the amount of responsibility that is placed on your shoulders and the increasing amount of responsibilities you’ve gained over 6 months you are certainly worth more. Especially being that Boston is a busy area as opposed to if you worked in Macon, Georgia.
My best advice to you is to request an increase while utilizing the main point being the fact that you are doing much more than the initial job description entailed. I’m sure you are being taken advantage of because of your good nature which is apparent due to the fact that you care for children. Good Luck!
hello – are you paid legit or under the table? do you have healthcare through them? if they pay taxes etc on you then this seems like a reasonable wage, but it does depend on how many hours over 40 you are working. if its under the table you should get more as they are not contributing to social security etc and that will affect you for the rest of your life. but this is all speculative. if you are using your own car to transport them you should have gas and other costs covered for that as well. and if you have care of other kids you should be paid more for those hours. i suggest you write up or keep a copy of the daily to do lists and show them how they differ from what you agreed upon 6 months ago. good luck
They are so using you. I would start looking for another job. 430 a week to do all of that? Oh my. My mom pays me 115 a week to help pay for college, and all i have to do for that is vaccuum three times a week, take out the trash, and clean her bathroom once a week. That is light house work. What your doing is.. wow. how do you find time for yourself? They can’t just add more work!!!
If you’re full time, that means you work 40 hours a week right? no overtime? that figures to 10 dollars an hour. I assume the cost of living in Boston is higher than the cost of living where I live… Minimum wage here is 6.55 an hour. You’d think that the parents would want to pay the nanny more to pretty much be the primary caregiver for their children. If I were to hire a nanny (just a nanny, not a housekeeper too) I’d pay at least 100 dollars a day- at least! I mean at the minimum, that’s 8 hours of watching young children. I know people that pay babysitters 40 dollars+ an hour. Think of that. Good luck!!
